A masala revolution

It's been long since I sat for a blog. But yes, everything needs a right time. A right thing done at a wrong time may not end up right. This time its a hybrid blog (தமிழ் + English ). If you aren't hybrid you are anti- environmental !

Came across the news 'govt approves 20k crore for green hydrogen'. Another news reads the market is pegged at 500 billion dollars by 2050. What is going around with this new buzz word green hydrogen. Why do we need it. Or rather why the west and G7 needs it.

In 1945, the then US president sealed a great deal with middle east to supply oil that has so far been the energy driver. More importantly dollar was made as the currency of procurement. The growth of the west and the middle east Kings need no explanation. Now that the non renewable source has depleted and has lead to climate changes with its carbon emission, G7 needs new forms of energy. To save planet? The table has reversed now. China makes a similar deal with middle east these days. For what? To pay for oil in their own currency instead of dollars. China aims to de-dollar this huge market and yes they have the potential to do that. The west or G7 is left with no option to get out of this market as early as possible to avoid huge inflation in a petro-Yuan market. This is otherwise called 'petro'politics. Ok, let this be on one side.

Reliance, Tatas have been acquiring slowly and steadily water and water based companies like Bisleri, Campa cola for some time now. Again let this be on one side.

The recent film 'Raangi' - a fine story made with a crappy screenplay ends with the statement by an African 'take care of yourself as your land is as wealthy as us' in his dying moment. This is not new for us as we have already seen such exploitation on our resources and still recovering from those damages but the timing of these lines is a true reminder.

Green hydrogen. What is it. In simple terms, to produce electricity we need fuel. So far this fuel as you know was/is coming from fossil - coal, natural gas etc. In all these forms of fuel, carbon is emitted. Hydrogen is an alternate fuel which does not emit carbon. But how to capture hydrogen from the air around us? It can be done in various ways but will not take a chemical lecture. Simply to put, this production of hydrogen can be called 'green' if in the process to generate it, we do not emit carbon. Otherwise they are termed as grey hydrogen, pink hydrogen etc.

The simple flow in this production process is here; produce electricity through renewable means -> use this electricity for electrolyis - > bring water for electrolyis -> electrolysis will split H2O -> extract H2 -> transport -> use as fuel wherever needed.

Aren't there any other process that can fetch clean energy? Yes there are. Bio mass. But this will mean planting palm tress in the size of a state, cutting and extracting bio fuel from them. This is rather impractical as we are talking about Giga Watts magnitude.

Now you can very much think about the two main things. Water that is required to produce hydrogen. Clean energy (solar, wind, tidal) that can produce electricity for electrolyis. Next question, can this water be sea water? The answer is yes but it will need desalination process and you might very well know if it was feasible do we have to worry about water scarcity on earth. Solar energy is continous and now you know if G7 has this energy all the year around. When something is scarce, its cost is high. G7 can make green hydrogen but comes with a higher cost.

So who is that going to be exploited. வேற தர்ம குந்தாணி யாரு (thanks to my wife for this word). We know the reason for Made in India, Made in Bangladesh clothes. G7 will never make it. Making it means exploiting their water resource.

Brazil, India, Australia are key target places that can provide green hydrogen due to their natural resources. Australia being geographically unfavourable for transport the onus falls on the first two. No doubt it is our chance to turn the table to become the global energy provider but the view that India can produce 'cheap' green hydrogen is hurting. We shouldn't accept this. It's time to demand HydroRupee.

As in 1945, various presidents will visit to seal the deal.

  1. PS: Often a question people ask is how long did it take to write the blog. This time I made sure I clocked it and it reads 33 minutes. And I will be more than happy if you share in your circles, no bar.
